Mexican Football Federation unveiled a redesigned crest to represent the Mexican National Team ahead of Qatar 2022

Last night at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, amidst a choreographed dance and light show, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) revealed an unexpected new shield design to represent Mexico’s National Soccer Team in the World Cup FIFA 2022.

This is the eighth shield worn by the Mexican team, but the fourth most significant change since 1978 when the soccer ball and the Aztec calendar were added to the emblem.

Our new image represents the unbreakable spirit of Mexicans who never give up and who are the greatest motivation of our institution 🇲🇽💚.

There is still no official press release explaining the creative decisions or concept behind the redesign. The closest explanation we got is a 2min video titled “This is made of the Mexicans.” But my question is, which Mexicans? Because so far I’ve only read negative reviews.

The new crest shows a more abstract and geometric eagle posing with outstretched wings on a Telstar soccer ball, resembling the eagle perched on a prickly pear tree from the Mexican flag.

The eagle is framed by an abstract version of the Aztec calendar in the Mexican flag colors, and the name of Mexico in an outline font inspired by Lance Wyman’s iconic (and now overused) Mexico ’68 Olympic design.

Rumors of a new shield began in September when three logos previously filed as trademarks in Mexico leaked online. The three design drafts also feature the eagle and the soccer ball, but they have a more traditional look and are more detailed, almost like the crests of the English football clubs.

My Final Opinion

I understand the intention of wanting to modernize the shield, clubs like Juventus, the US Men’s National Soccer Team, and Ecuador have done successfully, but honestly, this new Mexican crest feels like something I’ll see on a fake jersey at the flea market.

The idea of sharp geometric lines to represent Aztec heritage is very cliché, and the wannabe Mexico ’68 outline font isn’t even well done. Plus, if the intention was to simplify the shield for its use on digital platforms (which they haven’t confirmed), this design doesn’t even work for that.

TBH, I feel they selected the worst option from the four possible designs. The other options weren’t modern or simple, but at least they gave the impression of a professional shield. I guess this is just another design failure of the Mexican institutions.

But well… at least that’s my F opinion. What’s yours?
