Renault has revealed a new logo inspired by the past and powered the future of electric vehicles
This is Renault’s first major redesign since 1992 and it is part of the company’s new strategy to become a leader in the technology, service, and clean energy sectors.
Strategy: The French Renaulution
The new logo is part of Renault’s new “Renaulution” strategy, announced last January in France and where the new diamond was first previewed on the grille of the Renault 5 Prototype.
“Renaulution” is the 5-year plan of the French automaker to offer the greenest mix of vehicles in Europe by 2025, including 7 EVs inspired by past famous models, and explore new business opportunities in the technology, services, and clean energy sectors.
With this new plan, Renault wants to move beyond car manufacturing and be a provider of the best connectivity and high-tech services embedded in vehicles. For instance, in 2022, the company will introduce My Link, a new multimedia system with built-in Google services to control car functions hands-free.
Logo: Diamonds are cars’ best friend
Gilles Vidal, Director of Design at Renault, mentioned that after seeing the enthusiasm and the positive feedback the company received after previewing the logo in January, they decided to officially launch it.
Vidal also says that the new logo was designed in-house and is a call back to Renault logos in the 1940s, ’50s, and ’70s when the brand used lines to add details to the logo.
The new logo appears without a wordmark and comprises two intertwining diamond shapes similar to the 1972’s version designed by Victor Vasarely. It was also optimized for animation and digital media to accompany Renault as it expands into the fields of technology and connectivity.
The interconnected diamonds can be seen illuminated on the grille of the Renault 5 prototype, similar to what companies like Volkswagen and Nissan are doing, and in the front lights of the car (amazing detail IMO).
The logo is expected to appear on vehicles from 2022, and the entire range of Renault vehicles will carry the new logo by 2024.
My Final Opinion
Now that we know that all car brands are moving towards illuminated logos, it is interesting to see the rationale for their redesigns beyond the “everyone is doing it.” And I think Renault really found a way to connect it to its vision.
Now that we know that Renault is planning to launch electric versions of its famous vintage models, having a new logo that merges the future and the past seems to be a great justification and concept for their redesign.
We’ll still have to wait and see if they launch a redesigned wordmark. Hopefully, they would, because I don’t think this double diamond is as recognizable as the Volkswagen monogram.
Knowing that Renault wasn’t really planning to officially launch this new logo and was just testing it back in January, I think there’s a promising visual identity in the future.
